Are manual breast pumps THAT awful? | |

Question
I want to breastfeed, but I really can't fit an electric breast pump into my budget. (I'd love a medela pump in style) but I just feel it wouldn't be in my best economic interest. My hospital charges $20 a week to rent a breast pump, which is absurd. I'm not sure how often I'll be away from my baby, but it will be at least one day a week after he's about 5 weeks old. (I know that breastfeeding should be well established before pumping) Would I be able to use a cheap manual pump to store enough milk to be away for one day a week? Or would you really suggest an electric? (perhaps I can look into getting one used on ebay?)
Answer
I breastfed Noah for two weeks, after that it didn't work out, but used a manual pump during the time. It wasn't HORRIBLE but my husband bought me a cheap $40 electric one and it was like Heaven! I wouldn't say an electric one is necessary, just nice, and if you're only going to need to pump for one day a week then a manual would do the job just fine. Permalink:
