The manufacturers know this and so in order to make their product stand out from the masses they promote every feature as if it was something innovative and special. This article looks at the six most common storage features in fridge freezers and ranks them from most indispensable to those that you can quite easily live without.
1. Fridge door balcony - The section in the door that milk is commonly stored in. This is an exceptionally common feature but it is also arguably the most important storage compartment after shelving. Many manufacturers make these deep enough to hold two litre bottles but buyers should be aware that this is not always the case.
2. Freezer drawers - Most modern freezers come with drawers rather than shelves and for good reason. Having a shelf means that if you want to reach something at the back you need the dig through the items at the front whereas with a drawer you can pull it out and reach in easily. Although the presence of freezer drawers is not noteworthy in itself they are an essential feature to have.
3. Adjustable shelving - Some models come with shelves that can be adjusted while they are fully loaded (so called "smart shelves") while others have to be emptied and removed before being slid back in at another height. Even though the ability to change your shelf configuration is not uncommon it is another feature that is extremely desirable.
4. Freezer door balcony - This is by no means as common as the fridge door balcony but it also is not as useful. Depending on the dimensions of the balcony itself you might be able to store whole frozen pizzas or just small items like ice lollies. This is essentially just an easily accessible compartment so it can be useful if there are a few items you use more than others but by no means is it a must have item.
5. Wine rack - A place for storing bottles, usually suspended above the shelf. A wine rack can be made out of plastic, metal or even wood and it fulfils the very basic function of making it easier to store wine. Other bottles can fit into a wine rack but because of their slender shape they tend not to be suitable for storing drinks like soda which come in larger vessels.
6. Can ladder - Uses the same logic as a wine rack but for cans. If you buy a lot of cans then it is worth having but the effort of loading the ladder and the fact that they are almost always designed for 330ml drinks only, limits their usefulness.
